Since April 2013, Thon Hotel EU has had two beehives on its green roof. Bees play an important role in the production of 75% of our fruits and vegetables as they transport the pollen from flowering plants. Without these bees, our menu would be very restricted. Contrary to what one might believe, bees feel better in the city than in the countryside which results in a higher honey production. This has several reasons:
- As there is no agriculture in the city, no pesticides are used which has an influence on the bee mortality
- Urban ecosystems are very rich and diversified; 4 parks can be found within less than 1 km from Thon Hotel EU
- The temperature in Brussels is in general 3 to 5° higher than on the countryside
- Bees have easy access to water in Brussels
At Thon Hotel EU, we believe it is important to play a leader’s role in raising awareness for sustainable themes such as the importance of bees in our daily life. By installing beehives in collaboration with Apis Bruoc Sella, encouraging people to have an eye for native plants by handing out flower seeds, and by organising information sessions for staff and guests, we help Brussels becoming an example of sustainable city.
With our ideal location in the middle of the European heart of Brussels, we hope also European political and administrative authorities will take up responsibility towards their citizens and the cities’ biodiversity.
