Tourism and ”black gold” – We are very optimistic regarding the development in this region, says Director of Operations Marianne Wang Polden, who is responsible for most of the Thon hotels in Northern Norway. In particular, it is the combination of oil and gas related development and a number of highly interesting local initiatives in the travel sector which makes this an interesting region for us. When we have finished our new projects, I believe that we can present some of Norway’s finest hotels.
Brand new hotel in Kautokeino, Finnmark In June 2008, Thon Hotel Kautokeino opens as a modern conference hotel with 68 rooms. The interior will be fashioned in cooperation with local designers, with a dual focus on the traditional and the contemporary. The hotel will be a natural starting point for travellers wanting to explore the exciting region of the Norwegian steppes. In addition to Thon Hotel Kautokeino, there is a lot of activity in other cities in the northern region of Norway. Thon Hotel Polar will soon be opening 20 new rooms. Thon Hotel Brønnøysund is planning an extensive modernization, combining the hotel with a regional cultural centre in 2009. The largest projects at the moment, however, are in Lofoten and Hammerfest. Thon Hotel Lofoten In Lofoten, work on the new hotel has started and we hope that it will be finished in April 2009. The new hotel will also include a cultural centre and a state of the art conference centre. Thon Hotel Hammerfest The region around Hammerfest has gone through a period of explosive growth in connection with the construction of the natural gas facility on Melkøya. Thon Hotel Hammerfest has applied for an expansion of the hotel to accommodate the growing demand for hotel rooms. Pending approval from local authorities, work on the hotel will commence in April this year. Thon Hotel Hammerfest will have great conference facilities and a restaurant with international standard.
