 Ålesund and Sunnmøre

Ålesund and Sunnmøre are the ideal base for exploring some of Norway’s best-known scenic and cultural attractions. Ålesund’s beautiful Jugendstil/Art Nouveau architecture is famed around the world. A host of towers, spires and ornate building decorations make this a distinctive, almost ‘fantasy’ town. An abundance of fjords, fishing hamlets, island charm and majestic mountains await you at Sunnmøre.

Atlanterhavsparken - The Norwegian Aquarium

Atlanterhavsparken is one of the Nordic Region’s largest saltwater aquariums, and one of the top tourist attractions in Northwestern Norway. The aquarium was officially opened on 15 June 1998 by the Norwegian Royal Couple during Ålesund’s 150th anniversary.

Trandal and Christian Gaard

Just a 50 min. trip from the hotel, including the boat ride. We travel by boat into the wilds of beautiful Hjørund Fjord in Ørsta. Trandal is a tiny settlement of 6 inhabitants with no road, and served only by boat or ferry. Trandal boasts the extraordinary Christian Gaard pub-restaurant run by its amazing hosts Lenita and Daniel Storeide. Trandal and Christian Gaard are an experience that is bound to please!

Bjørke

Bjørke in the Hjørund Fjord may be unknown as a tourist destination, but is perhaps one of Norway’s finest and most well-hidden gems. Bjørke is stunningly located deep inside Hjørund Fjord. This place has a delightful little church, and old court-house, and a very dramatic history, and has been shaped by people living at one
with nature, through good times and bad.

Alnes

The handsome Alnes Lighthouse is located in the fishing hamlet of Alnes on Godøy. The lighthouse dating from 1876 is a listed building, and a monument to Norwegian lighthouse and coastal cultural heritage. Take in the fascinating historical exhibition, and peruse the local souvenirs and handicrafts. Climb the steep steps to the top of the lighthouse and be impressed
by the breath-taking view of the ocean and coastal landscape. Round off your visit to the original lighthouse keeper’s dwelling
where you can enjoy one of the famous cakes home-baked by the lighthouse’s housekeeper.

Ørsta

Ivar Aasen hailed from Ørsta, and this handsome building was designed by the architect Einar Fehn. The building houses Nynorsk Kultursentrum devoted to the (New) Norwegian language and offers activities for all ages.

Runde

Runde is one of the most remote islands off the Sunnmøre coast and is famed for its large population of nesting puffins – around half a million! Weather conditions on the island are harsh, surrounded as it is by open sea to the south, west and north.

Large tracts of the island are a bird sanctuary with limited access in the nesting period, but a walk up to the highest point, around 300 m above sea level, is an easy, although breath-taking, excursion for all ages. We warmly recommend making the most of Fosnavågen’s restaurants which enjoy a well-earned reputation for their cuisine and fresh produce.
