In the middle of Hallingdal, you'll find the town of Ål, known for its beautiful nature and strong cultural scene. You may be familiar with such famous locals as Darling West, Stein Torleif Bjella and the Hellbillies. And last but not least, Ål is the birthplace of businessman Olav Thon, who started Thon Hotels. 

In the municipality of Ål, traditions are strong, whether in terms of folk music and folk dancing, food or handicrafts. But Ål is also surrounded by fantastic nature, with both forests and mountains nearby. Outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to fantastic routes for hiking and cycling, horseback riding, skiing and fishing.

Ting å gjøre i Ål

Ål cultural centre and cinema 

Ål is known for its cultural centre, packed with activities all year round. Everything from theatre productions and concerts to revues and lectures, as well as major events like the Norwegian Folk Music Week festival, are arranged here. Ål cinema is also located here.

The cultural centre houses the world’s largest permanent exhibition of the work of Rolf Nesch, who lived in Ål for over 20 years. You can visit the rosemaling exhibition 'Hallingrosa' and Galleri Syningen, which has changing exhibitions.

The cultural centre also houses Ål tourist information office. In addition to brochures and tips for activities, the office also provides maps, fishing permits and more.

Hallingdal Museum

The Hallingdal Museum consists of six locations around Hallingdal, including the Ål Bygdamuseum from 1946. The museum has buildings originating from different farms and crofts, including a sauna, loft, barn, cowshed, sheep stable, pigsty and stone cabin. In the summer, the museum is open on certain days of the month and it is possible to take a tour inside the buildings. There are various courses and activities organised here throughout the year, with a focus on food, handicrafts and education.

Hallingdal holiday park

This activity park has fun challenges for young and old alike. In the climbing park Høyt & Lavt, you can test your climbing skills and experience the thrill of a zipline over the Hallingdal River. The youngest family members can have fun in the play area, with obstacle courses, slides and climbing walls. Older children and adults can enjoy canoeing and SUP boarding on the nearby Hallingdalselva river. The activity park also has a bike park with jumps, slopes and challenging trails. Or perhaps you're in the mood for a round of adventure golf? The 12 holes take you to several of the sights in Hallingdal.

Ål ski resort

For those who love winter sports, the Ål ski resort is an obvious destination when travelling to Ål in the winter. The Svartebergløypa run, one of Norway’s best downhill slopes, is often used by the women’s and men’s national alpine skiing teams. The 13 kilometres of slopes have different levels of difficulty, so you’re sure to find one that's right for you. And the children’s lift is free!

Ål and Hallingdal are a paradise for nature lovers. In the Hallingdalselva river, you can fish for trout, go swimming and canoeing. Fishing is also popular in the numerous mountain lakes. Ål is a mountain village, which means it is close to beautiful and majestic mountain scenery. There are miles of hiking trails and cycling paths here. Shopping in Ål

The centre of Ål is a charming shopping destination where you can easily stroll from shop to shop. The last Saturday in July is Ål Day, featuring outdoor dining, great offers and a range of activities for the entire family. In the middle of the city centre is also the Ålingen shopping centre, which has a state-run liquor store, pharmacy, bookshop and clothing shops.

Hallingdal is known for its traditional dishes and local ingredients, whether you’re eating lunch or dinner. Tid kafé og landhandel is a charming café in the town centre where you can enjoy lunch or simply a cup of coffee, while the country store sells local goods and delicacies.

Locally sourced ingredients are also available at Bergtatt Bistro at Topcamp Hallingdal, which serves both lunch and dinner and offers take-away meals for those on the go.

If you're in the mood for Asian food, head to the Asian Forest Restaurant.

After spending a day in the mountains, you can enjoy freshly baked waffles or even a three-course meal at Bergsjøstølen mountain lounge, with panoramic views of the Bergsjø area and Hallingskarvet.

  • Ål is located in Viken county, what used to be called Buskerud, between Hol and Hemsedal and bordering Nore og Uvdal, Nesbyen and Gol in the south and Lærdal in Vestland county in the north.
  • No less than 81 percent of the municipality is mountainous, with altitudes as high as 900 metres above sea level.
  • Ål has around 1,700 lakes and bodies of water.
  • In Ål, they speak the Halling dialect and use Nynorsk as their written language. Examples are 'ga ru o re?' (did you give it to him?), rigg (back) and ei viku (a week).
  • Olav Thon, the man behind Thon Hotels, was born in Ål in Hallingdal in 1923.
